An early 19th century intaglio in blue glass with the words "I wound to heal" and the image of a knife etched into the surface. Intaglios with mottos such as this were especially popular in the early 1800s, when they were used to make an impression in the wax sealing a letter. The motto often teased at the message enclosed inside. Note that one of the images at right is shown in mirror image to show how the impression would appear in wax.
