An unusual Austro-Hungarian Renaissance Revival pelican pendant, enameled front and back in green and white and set pink rubies, tourmaline, and pearls. In sterling silver. A Renaissance-Revival design movement inspired Austro-Hungarian jewelers during the 1870-90s, who reproduced 16th century designs.
Pelican imagery in European art dates back to the 13th century, typically a symbol for self-sacrifice in religious art.
On a vintage, but newer 18 inch sterling silver chain.
