An unusual 19th century long chain with alternating niello bar links, gold filled links, and silver rosettes. No clasp, but long enough to go over the head. A single extra loop is present where a pendant could be attached.
Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead inlaid into engraved silver. It's a centuries old technique, but it was particularly popular in France and Russia at the end of the 19th century.
