An antique mid-Victorian cut steel necklace in an unusually minimal form. Individually studs riveted onto brass plates. Dates to c1850.
Cut steel jewelry dates back to the 18th century and was particularly popular in France in the 1780s to 1820s when sumptuary laws limited production of gold and diamond jewelry. The faceted and polished steel studs vaguely resemble the foil-backed rose cut diamonds popular in this era.
