An French-made niello locket dating to the late 19th century with an unusual geometric pattern that was probably inspired by North African tile work. Inside is a glass compartment that hinges open for storing a photograph or a lock of hair. As found, on a nice quality sterling chain with a safety chain. Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver, and lead inlaid into engraved silver. It's a centuries old technique, but it was particularly popular in France at the end of the 19th century.
