A large-scale Victorian chain necklace made of vulcanite-- an early thermoplastic derived from rubber. The color of the vulcanite here has faded to a somewhat unusual olive-brown color that resembles rusted metal. Although it looks quite heavy, the material is extremely lightweight. Clasps with its original metal dog clip. Dates to the 1880s.
