A c1860 mid-Victorian gold locket with a glazed compartment of plaited brown hair under the word "souvenir." Inside are a pair of photographs, one of which is a tintype of a child and probably original to the locket, the other on paper, and probably added later. The back is engraved "Isaiah." Beautifully made in 18K rosy gold with hand engraved detailing. The word souvenir in this context is closer to the French word meaning "to remember." In Victorian jewelry it was sometimes used for mourning but also sometimes for sentimental jewelry.
